Greater Sudbury firefighters rescued a man from a smoke-filled Lourdes Street apartment on Sunday afternoon.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services got the call at 4:48 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Four vehicles carrying 13 firefighters from two stations responded to the call for service.

When they arrived, firefighters found the apartment filled with smoke. The cause of the smoke was found to be a pot left unattended on a hot stove. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The lone man in the apartment was taken to hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

Damages to the five-storey apartment building — moderate smoke damage and minor fire damage — are estimated at $50,000. Only the one apartment was affected.

GSFS reminds all residents that it is the law in Ontario that working smoke alarms be installed on every storey of a residence and outside all sleeping areas. Alarms should be tested monthly and batteries changed once a year.

Smoke alarms increase your chances of surviving a fire by 50 per cent.
