A Sudbury teen had to be rescued by firefighters Thursday afternoon after he became stranded on a rock at High Falls near the A.Y. Jackson Lookout.

Platoon Chief André Groulx of Greater Sudbury Fire Services told Sudbury.com that two teen boys climbed down onto the rock from a pedestrian bridge that crosses the rapids.

While one boy was able to climb back onto the bridge from the rock, the other was not, necessitating the rescue.

Fire officials responded at around 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

Using an extension ladder, one firefighter — harnessed to the bridge — climbed down to the stranded boy and brought him back up.

The rescue was completed without incident and neither boy sustained injuries.

GSFS tweeted a photo of personnel preparing for the rescue yesterday at 4:32 p.m.

Groulx says its important for people, especially youth, to remember the dangers of fast-flowing waters.

“The currents in these waters are very strong,” he said. “They're much more powerful than people think.”

Groulx says police also responded to the incident.

“I think (the officers) gave these boys a pretty stern talking-to about the dangers,” he said.
