Mayor Brian Bigger raised the Special Olympics flag at Princess Anne Public School Jan. 14 in honour of the Special Olympics 50th anniversary.

Also in attendance were Special Olympics athletes Cheryl Bruce, Duane Gunn and Danie Houle, Sudbury community co-ordinator Lynne Houle, as well as students with Princess Anne school and Jean Hanson Public School.

As the event was organized by the Knights of Columbus, the flag will make its way to other KOC chapters, then to the Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games, which will be held in the Sault Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.

Special Olympics Sudbury is proud to announce they have 32 athletes attending the upcoming event in figure skating, snowshoeing, floor hockey and five-pin bowling.

Powerlifter Josee Seguin has also been named to Team Canada for the World Summer Games, to be held in the United Arab Emirates in March.

“It's going to be an amazing year,” said a press release.
