Follow the exploits of our summer co-op student, Intern Annie, on Instagram

Over the next few weeks, Confederation High student Annie Duncan will be chronicling her experience at Sudbury.com. Follow her journey @Intern_Annie on Instagram

My name is Adriana Duncan, but most people just call me Annie, and my love of photography started with a blueberry. I am a 17 year old student at Confederation Secondary School, and for the next few weeks I will be a co-op student with Sudbury.com/Northern Life.

So, my dad and I had the idea to gift hand-picked berries to a friend who lives in Toronto and who had never eaten them fresh before. When we were out picking, my dad wanted to shoot a photo album of us picking as a little memento for his friend. For some reason my dad could not get his phone to focus on this little patch of blueberries. He tried and tried but all of his pictures were blurry.

So, I took the phone from him and a minute later I handed it back with a clear picture filling the screen. He looked down at it in amazement and asked me how I did that. He told me that it was actually pretty good considering it was taken on an iPhone 5.

After that, everywhere we went I would take pictures, of anything and everything I came across. I saw beauty in everything around me. My dad saw my potential and for my Grade 8 graduation he and my mom got me a camera of my own.

I soon became the family photographer, documenting every family event. My dad and I would go out and just wander, taking pictures together. My passion for photography mixed with my desire to travel and I came across the occupation of photojournalism. It was basically me in a nutshell.

So, I started working on building my resume and a portfolio, which brings me to where I am now, my summer internship with Sudbury.com.

My dream is to be a photojournalist. I would love to travel the world and really make a difference with my pictures. Show people what is really going on in our world, good and bad. I want to document history for future generations so they can possibly do things better than we are now. I plan to to do some traveling after high school. Just me and my camera against the world. I haven't quite decided where I'm going to start but I still have some time for that.

The first week I had with Sudbury.com was outstanding. I photographed two events, the Pride flag-raising that happened at James Jerome Sports Complex and the Pride barbecue on Evergreen Street. I was taught how to write cutlines for the pictures I took at the events and I started updating Sudbury.com's file photos.

File photos are photographs of known streets, buildings, restaurants and landmarks around the city that are used for stories that cover those specific places.

We decided it would be a fun idea to start an Instagram page to document my internship here at Sudbury.com. The @intern_annie Instagram page will feature photographs I have taken during of my placement, behind the scenes images of the newsroom, my adventures around town, me photographing events, and more.

This project is being used to teach me about how social media can help enhance news and expand its audience. I am using this page to tell a story in a non-traditional way. Social media has become a large part of society and allows stories to be broadcast to millions of people, and I would like to share my story with the world.
