Food bank dishes out $245K to member agencies in fall give

Nov. 14 event brings total to more than $8.9 million since food bank's inception

At the Elizabeth Fry Society in Sudbury, as fast as the financial donations come in, it goes out just as quickly, said the organization's housing case manager.

Candace Keefe said the Elizabeth Fry Society provides supportive services and assistance to women in conflict with the law or at risk of becoming in conflict with the law.

“We supply our clients and their households with healthy food,” Keefe said. “We see a lot of people every day who are in need, and we help take some of that stress off their shoulders and to feed their families and take care of their own.”

That's why the Elizabeth Fry Society depends on the generosity of the community. The society is one of the 44 member agencies of the Sudbury Food Bank, which handed out more than $245,000 to its member agencies on Nov. 14 for their fall give campaign. That's the money raised over the past six months.

To date, the Sudbury Food Bank has distributed more than $8.9 million to local food charities, as well as more than 4,227 tons of perishable and non-perishable food items since its inception.

“We thank all the citizens of the City of Greater Sudbury who allow us to continue our important work to fee the hungry and less fortunate in our region,” said a news release. “The Sudbury Food Bank is dedicated to the alleviation of hunger for those living in the region Greater Sudbury and ensuring that every person in our communities has enough to eat.”
