Former councillor honoured at dedication ceremony

Fabio Belli served as Ward 8 councillor from 2010 - 2014

Former Ward 8 councillor Fabio Belli was honoured during an emotional ceremony on May 14 at Twin Forks community garden.

Belli served as councillor for the ward from 2010 to 2014 and was instrumental in the park's development.

“We're seeing the fruition of the park and it's becoming more and more dynamic and this is the vision of Fabio,” said Ward 8 coun. Al Sizer.

“He spent a great deal of his HCI funds to put in a new play structure, redo the washrooms in this facility and so on. When I was out campaigning in 2014, everyone I spoke to who knew Fabio, no one had a bad thing to say. They were more than pleased with the job he did for them, he was respectful, always answered calls and was really well liked. He set a very high standard for me to meet.”

Belli passed suddenly in April 2014, and is survived by his wife Suzie, daughters Emma (8) and Brianna (7) as well as his parents Gianfranco and Franca, all of whom were in attendance Saturday morning.

“Fabio really did have vision for this park and he really wanted it to be developed,” said Suzie. “It's so wonderful to see the beautiful gardens, the enhanced play structure, and I really want to thank the (Ward 8) community action network and everyone who came together to make this happen. It's wonderful that the girls and I will be able to come here together.”

During his time on council, Belli served under mayor Marianne Matichuk, who spoke about her time working alongside Fabio.

“I considered him a true friend, which is rare in politics,” said Matichuk.

“He was a man of his word, was a visionary and wanted to make sure his family, friends and constituents were proud of him. He fought the good fight and gave the citizens what they voted him in for.”
