Former Sudbury mayor Marianne Matichuk has been appointed the inaugural chief administrative officer for Laurentian University's Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH).

In her new role Matichuk will be responsible for expanding capacity at CROSH and steering the centre’s efforts to achieve key strategic priorities, including the launch of the planned mobile research laboratory, M-CROSH. The position is funded in part by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

“Over the past five years, CROSH has amalgamated research expertise from various disciplines, and forged alliances with industry and labour, while raising $3 million to build state-of-the-art research lab facilities, including the Mobile Research Lab and Workplace Simulator,” said Leo Gerard, chair of the CROSH advisory board and international president of the United Steelworkers, in a press release.

“Marianne was the ideal candidate, as she is a passionate advocate for health and safety in the workplace and has over 30 years of OHS experience,” said CROSH director Dr. Sandra Dorman, in a press release.

Matichuk said in a press release she is thrilled to get started with her new role.

“The research that is led by CROSH is making a vital difference in the lives of workers and their families and I am proud to play a part in it,” she said.
