Four forest fires are burning in the Northeast, two of which were found Monday afternoon according to the lastest fire situation update by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFE).
The forest fire hazard ranges from low to extreme across the region, with the areas of most concern situated near Gogama, Temiskaming Shores and Bissett Creek.
Algonquin Park 12 was found Monday near Grand Lake and is currently being held at 0.2 of a hectare.
Sudbury 37 was found Monday west of Venetian Lake and is currently not under control at 2.5 hectares.
Timmins 18 has been declared under control at 0.1 of a hectare and is located south of Lower Footprint Lake.
Cochrane 10 is still being observed at 74 hectares and is located around 100 km southeast of Moose Factory.
AFE asks residents to do their part in preventing forest fires by adopting safe campfire practices. Choose the site of your campfire carefully, keep your fire small and never leave a flame unattended. To extinguish your fire, drown it with water, stir the ashes to uncover hot coals, and drown it again before leaving the site.
Take prevention one step further by considering alternatives to burning brush or yard waste, such as chipping, composting, or saving burn piles for after the fire season. Use of outdoor fires must follow the outdoor burning rules set out in the Forest Fire Prevention Act of Ontario, which can be found here.
