On Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, an 11-year-old girl cut class and sat in Memorial Park to protest climate inaction.

According to Wikipedia, Sophia Mathur was the first youth outside of Europe to join Greta Thunberg and the Fridays For Future movement. Sophia's message then and still is "Adults must listen to the experts and cooperate."

Two years later, Greater Sudbury's Fridays For Future Sudbury is still going strong. Youth will be celebrating the two-year milestone Oct. 30 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in a COVID-safe manner, and they will incorporate Halloween into their celebrations.

In a series of locations, there will be activities including dancing, a shoe strike, parachutes and short speeches from youth, politicians, and others.

The theme of the event is the Darkness and the Light. Participants have been instructed to wear scary or nice Halloween costumes and carry a placard/sign with a message about the climate reckoning that is terrifying or a hopeful solution, respectively.

The deadline to sign up to take part in the event was Oct. 26.
