Friendship and fun marks 100 years of guiding in Sudbury

Almost 200 members of guides celebrate at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre

Sudbury's first guide group was formed in 1916.

It's that milestone that was celebrated Saturday at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre by almost 200 current members of the guiding movement — from Sparks to Brownies (the first Brownies group was formed in 1932), Girl Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers.

Dawn Moore, a guider and event planning committee member, said girls are drawn to guiding because of their curiosity, but they stay because of the friendships and knowledge they gain.

“We're here to have fun, and to celebrate being sisters in guiding,” Moore said.
On the agenda for the celebration was activities for the girls, a fashion show of uniforms from the history of guiding and a campfire. It was topped off with cupcakes.

Canada celebrated 100 years of guiding in 2010. Girl Guides of Canada is the leading organization for girls and women in Canada, with 83,000 members across the country.
