It has been a long winter and gardeners are anxious to get outside and get their hands dirty again.

To get the season going the Sudbury Horticultural Society is hosting the fourth annual Sudbury Gardening Festival on May 31 at the YMCA Centre for Life and the ParkSide Centre.

The event is free and starts at 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The festival will offer free presentations and exhibits with 40 vendors on hand showcasing their gardening-related products and services. Both new and experienced gardening enthusiasts can get information and advice about their plans for this season.

The Horticultural Show, in the ParkSide Centre, will be hosting their spring perennial sale out front. Those eager to get planting will be able to get perennials that they can start grooming their yards with again.

A number of local organizations are getting involved. The Greater Sudbury Public Library will have a display of gardening books, the Sudbury Regreening Advisory Panel (VETAC) will be handing out free shrub seedlings, and the Greater Sudbury Environmental Services will have free bags of compost.

The Sudbury and District Health Unit's tetanus clinic will also be on hand, and free shrub seedlings will be distributed by Sudbury's Regreening Advisory Panel (VETAC).
