Developers of the Kingsway Entertainment District have entered into an agreement with a hotel chain to build a “flagship hotel.”

In a news release, KED Inc. said it has inked an agreement with Genesis Hospitality, and that the future hotel “will represent a major investment in the City of Greater Sudbury.”

“We are incredibly excited to finally make this announcement,” said Dario Zulich. “We have been dealing with Genesis since well before COVID. They have visited us on several occasions, and we have walked the site. Genesis Hospitality is the perfect fit. They share the same vision as we do. They are ambitious and resourceful. They care about community and growth, just like us.”

The hotel chain said it looks forward to working with the city, Gateway Casinos and the KED on “this visionary and transformative project for Sudbury.”

“We will be constructing the biggest and the best hotel in Northern Ontario with a major brand to be announced shortly,” said Kevin Swark of Genesis Hospitality.

Mayor Brian Bigger said Genesis is a welcome addition to the project.

“It completes the partnership going forward with the plan,” said Bigger. “As a member of this community, it will contribute to future economic growth and the success of the KED.”

At the end of November, Gateway Casinos told the city that, while it still supports the project, now is not the time to break ground, and put a pause on the project due to the legal challenges the project continues to face.

More to come.
