Geoffrey Lougheed said he was honoured to preside over a ceremony on Nov. 27 to install Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor for British Columbia, as a Dame of Justice in the Order of St. John.

Austin was also installed as vice-prior for the St. John Ambulance British Columbia. During the ceremony, she said St. John Ambulance is innovative and entrepreneurial in its delivery of training and community services.

Lougheed called Austin an “outstanding individual with a strong legacy of serving and giving to her community, and that defines her new role as vice-prior for St. John Ambulance in B.C.”

The Order of St John is part of Canada’s national honours system. As head of the Order in Canada, the Governor General as Prior sanctions all appointments to the Order of St. John on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.

“St. John is honoured to have all Lieutenant-Governors and Territorial Commissioners serve as Vice-Priors for our organization in their respective provinces and territories,” said a news release.

The Order of St. John and St. John Ambulance Canada is part of a worldwide, non-denominational charitable organization, dedicated to the service of others.

With more than 18,000 volunteers contributing over a million hours of community service each year, St. John Ambulance Canada is an integral part of communities from coast to coast to coast offering such unique and innovative programs as: medical first response, disaster response, health and safety related adult and youth programs, search and rescue, home caregiver support, mental health first aid, Indigenous first aid instructor training and therapy dog visitation services.

As a charitable, humanitarian organization, proceeds from St. John Ambulance’s first aid training and first aid product sales directly support these vital community services programs.
