You can support the Out of the Cold hot meal program and see some giants of the Canadian folk scene at the same time this Sunday.

Dave Gunning and Garnet Rogers (brother of Maritime folk great Stan Rogers) hit the stage at St. Andrew’s Place this Sunday evening (that’s Sept. 25, folks).

Gunning is a multiple award-winning artist from Nova Scotia, who has said he considers Sudbury to be his “second home.” Gunning’s new album “Lift” continues his tradition of painting musical portraits of Atlantic Canada and of providing commentary on important social issues, concert organizer Bob Bale told Sudbury.com.

“Several of Gunning’s songs are considered folk anthems with ‘These Hands’ as a prime example and, more recently, (his) inspirational song of hope ‘Sing It Louder’ on the new album,” Bale said.

Gunning’s partner in crime for this show, Garnet Rogers, practically needs no introduction. In fact, Gunning has called him “a living legend,” Bale said.

Rogers toured extensively (and acted as tour manager) for his brother, Stan, helping helm one of the most “influential folks acts in North American folk music,” according to the bio on Rogers’ website.

Bale said the Washington Post described Rogers as having a “smooth, dark baritone” voice, while the Kitchener Waterloo Record describes his songs as giving “expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart.”

“This show promises to be one for the record books for those who love folk music,” Bale told Sudbury.com.

This the 14th year of the Dairy Queen Out of the Cold Concert Series. Organized by Bale, the concerts provide almost 75 per cent of the funding for the hot meal program. The $50 series pass (which gets you in to all three concerts in the series) goes a long way to helping feed some 200 people each Friday, from the beginning of November until the end of April.

Meals are served on alternate Fridays at Church of The Ephiphany and St. Andrews Place, with six teams of 30 people each taking turns preparing and serving the meal.

All shows start promptly at 7 p.m. at St. Andrews Place (which if you’ve never been there has excellent acoustics) and last for two hours, including an intermission.

The other concerts is the series include Dala on Oct. 30th and the BelleRegards Band on Nov. 20. All profit is donated to the Out Of The Cold hot meal program.
