Health Sciences North will officially welcome Dominic Giroux as its new CEO Oct. 2.

Giroux will also be taking over as the CEO of Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) and makes the move from Laurentian University, where he served as the school's longest-tenured president, holding the position from 2009 to 2017.

While the new CEO does not have a background in health care, HSN board chair Nicole Everest told Sudbury.com in April that Giroux's successful track record of defining a strategy, executing, setting very good objectives and targets and achieving the desired results were a big factor in his selection.

During Giroux's time at Laurentian, five new buildings were constructed and major renovations were undertaken, totaling $206 million. The school also managed to secure $80 million in private gifts and $64 million in government infrastructure investments.

So, what has Giroux been up to of late and what are his plans for HSN and HSNRI in the coming days, months, and beyond?

In a video released by HSN on Sept. 28, Giroux explained that he has been engaged with external stakeholders over the past few months and his focus is now shifting to the inner workings of HSN and HSNRI.

"I want to hear from you, whether you're employees, physicians, volunteers, learners, patient representatives," said Giroux in the video.

"I want to hear your vision, I want to listen to what you have to say, I want to listen to what makes you proud of HSN and HSNRI. I'd like to hear if you had a magic wand what would you like to change."

Through the feedback of HSN and HSNRI employees, Giroux is looking to develop the plan for the two institutions for the coming year.

Giroux goes on to say that he is "inspired and energized" by the patients-first mantra that is shared by those who work at HSN.
