Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Big week for city's big projects starts March 26:

Three major reports are headed to the city's planning committee next week, each of which, if approved, are likely destined to be appealed. Planning committee could meet three times next week to deal with an Official Planning amendment to allow the casino (March 26), and rezonings to allow a public arena and parking lot (March 28) on land on The Kingsway owned by Dario Zulich and partner Perry Dellecle. The committee will meet again March 29 if they don't finish March 28. More on this story can be found here.

Winter is finally over, sort of:

March 20 marks the first official day of Spring, but it doesn't look as if Mother Nature got the memo. Today's high is only expected to reach -4, compared to a yearly average of about 1 degree. We're not quite at the record cold that was March 20, 1986, when temperatures dipped to a low of -26, but we're not that far off as today's evening temperature is forecast to hit -18. Sudbury's warmest March 20 on record was just six years ago, when it was t-shirt and shorts record as the mercury soared all the way up to 23 degrees C.

Firefighters rescue dog from island on Wahnapitae River:

Greater Sudbury Fire Services rescued a dog from an island on Wahnapitae River on Monday afternoon. According the GSFS platoon chief Chris Stokes, the dog had been missing for more than a week after it ran off from its owners. "He travelled quite a distance to get where he was," said Stokes. "The owners were walking with him near Moonlight Beach when he took off." The fire service received a call at around 11 a.m. on March 19, informing them that a dog had been spotted on the small island. Firefighters were able to get to the island by boat and brought the dog back to the safety of its owners.

Afternoon collision turns into a licence suspension for St. Charles man:

On March 9, at around 12:50 p.m., members of the Sudbury OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Wahnapitae. While speaking to the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision, police observed that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. As a result of the investigation a 67-year-old man from St. Charles was arrested and charged with: Care or Control while Ability Impaired, Care or Control Over 80 mgs, Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor. The accused was issued a 90 day automatic drivers licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. Sudbury man wins free coffee for a year from Tim Hortons:

Sudburian Pierre Laliberte thought he had won a single free coffee when he rolled up the rim of his medium double-double on the first day of Tim Hortons Rrroll Up the Rim to Win Contest. It wasn't until four days later, when he went to redeem it at the Tim Hortons restaurant on Algonquin Road, that he learned he had actually won free coffee for a year. "I didn’t realize I won it for a year," Laliberte said. "The stub was in my wallet for three or four days. "When I went to get a coffee that they said 'you won coffee for a year. How come you aren't happy?' "But I was happy. I just can't show it." On March 19, Laliberte received his prize — a Tim Hortons gift card which entitles him to one free coffee a day for a year.
