A Good Samaritan who tried to resuscitate an injured man near Sudbury last November was recognized for his effort at an OPP awards ceremony in Cochrane.

Dan Dunstan received the St. John Priory Meritorious Certificate Thursday night at a presentation presided over by deputy commissioner Vaughan Collins.

On Nov. 17 Dunstan and a friend were driving to a campsite near the city when a man in an oncoming vehicle flagged them down.

The man told them his cousin was injured and that he had been forced to leave him behind to get help.

Dunstan, a friend, and the man who sought assistance, found the victim slumped over in the seat of a large land/water off-road vehicle.

The Good Samaritan checked the victim but could not detect any vital signs. The victim was moved to the back of a pickup truck and while Dunstan and his friend performed CPR, the man who sought help, who was also injured, drove them to a nearby camp.

An off-duty nurse who was staying there assisted in administering CPR until an ambulance arrived 30 minutes later.

The victim did not ultimately survive, but OPP say this in no way diminishes the extraordinary efforts of Dunstan and the other rescuers to save his life.

The other people involved in the rescue attempt will receive their awards at another ceremony.

OPP awards ceremonies honour citizens and provincial police members who have demonstrated acts of bravery, lifesaving, community service and exemplary performance of duty.

Two other ceremonies will be held in the fall, one in Echo Bay Sept. 19 and the other in Parry Sound Oct. 30.
