Greater Sudbury just made it into the top 10 most business-friendly cities in the micro city category, according to a ranking by fdiintelligence.com, a division of The Financial Times Ltd.

FDI issues an annual list it calls American Cities of the Future, which rates cities on a number of categories and sizes, which are determined by how well positioned they for future growth and how much money is being invested there.

The top overall city was New York, while Toronto and Montreal were fourth and fifth respectively. Greater Sudbury was in the micro city category, which was led by Langley, B.C., followed by Niagara Falls and North Vancouver.

“Sudbury, Canada's Resourceful City, is the home of a global cluster in mining and mining supply services,” FDI said in its  write up. “The city has a highly educated and motivated workforce, a strong network of industrial, commercial, financial and government support services, and an extensive telecommunications, transportation and logistics infrastructure.

“Sudbury is known as a regional centre for learning and applied research in Northeastern Ontario. These advantages, combined with the city's affordable real estate prices, make Sudbury a great place for businesses to locate and grow.”

It also quotes Mayor Brian Bigger as saying that Greater Sudbury is a globally recognized centre of excellence in environmental restoration and sustainability.

“We walk the innovation talk, linking Canada's resource sector with cutting-edge technology and exporting our expertise and products around the world,” Bigger said.

“With outstanding transportation linkages and a lifestyle that is truly second to none, Sudbury is a community that should be on everyone's list of prospective locations.”

FDI Magazine describes itself as the world's premier publication for the business of globalization.

“Published on a bi-monthly basis, the magazine provides corporate decision-makers and cross-border investment professionals with an up-to-date image of the ever-changing global investment map.”
