Local economist and Sudbury federal Green Party candidate David Robinson says Canada “has to kill its fossil fuel industry.”

With the recent heat waves and natural disasters in Canada, Robinson emphasizes the urgency of taking action on climate change.

“We lost 104 people to just one heat event this year. Our forests are burning,” Robinson said in a press release. “Canada has the second largest number of confirmed tornadoes each year and tornados are getting more frequent - look what happened in Barrie. Face the facts: the fossil fuel industry industry has to die!”

Robinson said that Canada is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. “We were number nine in the whole world on the Global Climate Risk Index in 2020,” he said.

As someone with a background in economy, Robinson predicts that Alberta may lose some high paying jobs with the elimination of the fossil fuel industry. He said that Alberta is the richest province in Canada and they pay the lowest taxes in the country. Alberta’s unemployment rate is also 1.5 per cent higher than Ontario’s, but is falling.

“We have labour shortages in Ontario. Those workers are wasted in the criminal fossil fuel industry. We need them here in Ontario,” said the Green Party candidate. “Canada does not need oil jobs. we need housing, retrofits, and clean power.”

Robinson said that the NDP has joined the Green Party in calling for an end to government subsidies for the oil industry. He said that producing and selling internal combustion vehicles, as well as gas furnaces must go as well.

“We can’t afford any more lazy, lackadaisical Liberal delays,” he said.

Robinson has created a Zoom chat link for anyone to join and discuss policies regarding climate economics. He will be hosting the online chats Monday to Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. here
