Growing numbers of Inner City Home food bank users spur $20K fundraising campaign

Donate $10 to 'Loving Hands' campaign, receive a car decal with charity's logo

In the month of December, when the holiday spirit moves people to donate to charities, the Inner City Home of Sudbury food bank shelves are full.

But by this time of year, when people aren't thinking so much about helping the less fortunate, some staples start to run out.

“Well, we're out of corn, we're out of beans, we're out of cereal,” said Jennifer Grooms, executive director of Inner City Home.

Given the charity is “really stretching things right now,” Inner City Home has launched its Loving Hands Campaign, and hopes to raise $20,000 during the month of February.

In 2019, Inner City Home's two food bank locations experienced record-breaking visits, supporting more than 2,500 children.

Grooms hopes everyone who is able will donate a minimum of $10 through the Loving Hands Campaign. The first 1,000 people who make a minimum donation of $10 will receive car decals with Inner City Home's new logo.

The organization not only runs a food bank, it also offers life skills courses such as anger management and building self esteem free of charge.

“The community would suffer without Inner City Home,” Grooms said. “If Inner City Home wasn't there to fill the need we have, the community would notice. There would be people in pretty bad shape.”

Inner City Home needs to raise $200,000 per year to stay afloat. “Basically we don't receive any government funding at all, she said. “We rely solely on donations.”

The organization is also holding the Loving Hands Campaign Gala Feb. 29 at the Steelworkers Hall, with a goal of raising $10,000.

Tickets cost $100 each, and include an elegant, formal dinner, wine, dancing, games and more.
