A combined squad of 13 and 14 year old GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) girls gelled quickly last weekend, picking up three wins in as many games at the North Bay Selects Challenge Cup, and not surrendering a single goal against in the process.

The locals wasted little time putting their talent on display, rolling over the North Bay Selects 13U girls 6-0 in their first game and winning by exactly half that margin versus the North Bay 14U girls in game two.

"Many of these girls played with us last year, but this team features some new faces who are just being exposed to this level of competition," noted coach Matt Binks. "We were able to get everyone in to both games and managed to keep two clean slates. As coaches, we could not ask for more."

That said, the youngsters apparently still had more to give, as they faced an undefeated and equally as talented Boréal Soccer Club 14U team on Sunday. Despite dealing with a couple of key injuries, the Sudbury squad displayed no drop in intensity, battling their way to a 2-0 triumph and completed the weekend with a flawless record of 3-0.

"We knew we were in tough today," stated coach Chris Binks. "We told the girls that if they focused on defense, our chances would come. They started nervous, but came to compete. I was very proud of this group."

"This weekend was a great way to start off the soccer season," acknowledged Tessa Favero, a veteran of the 14U team. "Every girl on the team worked very hard, and we were well guided by our coaches."

While many are making the jump back to soccer following a busy winter of hockey with one of the Lady Wolves' teams, those who have spent a little more time refining their soccer skills were quick to notice the difference.

"Having the opportunity to continue my training over the winter gave me the chance to practice some specific skills that I needed to improve on," suggested Isabelle Cotnoir, a member of the GSSC 13U contingent.

"Having done so paid off during our first tournament of the season." Both the 13U and 14U GSSC teams will be busy this summer, sliding in a series of games with Northern Ontario adversaries, and supplementing that experience with valuable tournament games down south.

Players participating in the North Bay Challenge Cup included Michela Bussolaro, Lauren Fearn, Brynn MacLean, Emily Binks, Tessa Favero, Mia Binks, Maeve McNamara, Kristen Mrozewski, Mackenzie Roberts, Jayda Cacciotti, Breighan Love, Arielle Bradley, Emma Coutu, Isabelle Cotnoir, Alison Symington, Amanda Symington, Arijana Tuttle, Elizabeth Laberge, Leena Abdel-Dayem, Maeve Caddel, Sophie Démoré, Jill Kusnierczyk and Avery Tullio.
