The company @home Energy has had multiple reports from customers who have received a phone call from a company claiming to be their current water heater rental provider, Greater Sudbury Utilities said in a news release Friday.

“The caller ID is displaying a non-local number with area code 613,” the release said. “The imposter then aggressively pressures to schedule a home visit to inspect the water heater. In some cases they give an appointment date and time, not allowing the customer an option. Many of these times are outside regular business hours and on the weekend.”

These callers are trying to gain access to your home, the release says, and anyone who has agreed to an appointment should not answer the door if someone arrives claiming to be the water heater rental company.

“If you receive a call similar to this, do NOT give out any information,” the release said. “Report the phone call to the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or contact your local police department.”

For future reference, the release said @home Energy does not call customers to demand access to water heater rentals.

To speak with an @home Energy representative, call 705-675-0525, “and we will be happy to speak with you,” the release said. “We urge all consumers to get educated, and to discuss fraud prevention with family and friends.”
