The Sudbury and District Board of Health has appointed a new associate medical officer of health, pending approval from the Minister of Health and Long Term Care.

Dr. Ariella Zbar, has been appointed for the position, which would have her work under the direction of medical officer of health Dr. Penny Sutcliffe to achieve the public health mandate for the region.

“Dr. Zbar brings a wealth of public health knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm, which will help to increase the capacity and responsiveness of the public health system in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts,” said Board of Health chair René Lapierre, in a press release.

“Recruiting talented physicians to northern Ontario is never easy. The board is delighted that Dr. Zbar will join our team of dedicated public health professionals.”

Previously, Zbar was a senior resident with the Queen’s University public health and preventive medicine program. She holds a master in public health and business administration from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from the University of British Columbia.

The Sudbury & District Board of Health has been without an associate medical officer of health since 2013. Zbar is the fifth physician to hold that position with the health unit in its 60-year history. The 2006 Final Report of the Public Health Capacity Review Committee, which was struck in the aftermath of SARS, recommended that every health unit should have one or more associate medical officers of health.
