The Ministry of Natural Resources will conduct a prescribed burn south of Sudbury in early April to try and assist elk habitat in the area.

Â?By burning off the thick, matted layers of dead grass we can encourage re-vegetation,Â? said Natural Resources minister Jerry Ouelette. Â?When that happens, species like elk and deer return to graze.Â?

The ministry will burn about 245 hectares of the abandoned field near the former Burwash Medium Security Correctional Institute, about 20 kilometres south of Sudbury along Highway 69.

In addition to improving wildlife habitat, the prescribed burn will slow the encroachment of tree species into the field.

The prescribed burn is scheduled for early April, depending on the weather. Trained ministry fire suppression staff will control the low intensity burn and access to the site will be restricted to authorized personnel the day of ignition.
