High winds knocked out power to about 500 Greater Sudbury Utilities customers tonight.

The outage affected residents in the area of Cranbrook Crescent, Southview Drive, Marcel Street and Bouchard Street starting at around 7:30 p.m. March 17.

In an email, GSU spokesperson Wendy Watson said power had been restored to most customers shortly after 8 p.m. About half of Cranbrook Crescent remains out, with the utility predicting an 11 p.m. restoration for those residents.

GSU said the wind — blowing at around 30 km/h with gusts higher than 40 km/h — was the likely cause of a powerline going down. Because the downed line was live, GSU shut off electricity to the area to allow crews to affect repairs.
