ake Wahnapitae  Home & Campers Association (LWHCA) has teamed up with Wahnapitae First Nation (WFN) to help prevent the spread of invasive species. The message: wash your boat.

Starting July 21, expect to see that message being pushed at both Tony's Marina and Rocky’s.

Alongside the beach party atmosphere of Larry Berrio’s Sandbanks Concert, volunteers will be informing the public about the need to clean boats to help protect lake ecosystems.

This initiative was launched after a recent discovery of spiny water flea in Lake Wanapitei. According to the groups, spiny water fleas threaten the water ecosystems and fishing activities by competing with the residing fish for food.

It is believed that this invasive species was introduced to the lake via boats, trailers and fishing gear transported from contaminated lakes, like Lake Ontario.

There is an additional potential for spreading this invasive species to other lakes in Sudbury by boats, trailers and fishing gear that are transported from Lake Wanapitei.
