While doctors will do their best to see everyone as quickly as possible, those with less urgent cases may have to endure a longer wait.

Â?The emergency department is the only show in town at certain times during the holiday season,Â? said Dr. Ray Wiss, medical director for the hospitalÂ?s emergency department, in a press release.

Â?At this time of the year, we will often see more than our usual 200 cases per day and that can translate into longer waiting times for those with less urgent cases.Â?

Wiss notes patients who visit the emergency department are seen in order of priority and not on time of arrival. That means critically ill patients will be seen immediately without delay.

People should also consider whether or not they need to go to emergency and whether there are less urgent solutions available such as walk-in clinics and pharmacies.

People can also access Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 to speak to a qualified nurse for advice.

SudburyÂ?s emergency department is one of the busiest in Ontario with over 65,000 visits annually. It provides 24-hour emergency services, seven days a week.
