The holidays are a time for family, friends and celebration. The Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH) Emergency and Trauma Programs wish to remind the public that the line between responsible moderation and unhealthy excess is easily crossed.
Binge-drinking is typically defined as the consumption of more than four drinks for women, and five for men, during one drinking episode. HRSRH Emergency Department medical director, Dr. Chris Bourdon, said it is important to share information about the potential harm that can result from excess alcohol consumption.
“We see an increased incidence of alcohol-related illness and trauma at this time of year,” said Bourdon. “The reality is that for some, the holidays are both a time of celebration and of excess. We know this behaviour is going to take place, so we want to emphasize that if you are going to drink, practice moderation or be prepared to deal with the consequences.”
Bourdon noted binge-drinking may limit self-control and judgment. The results of such behaviour can include motor vehicle accidents, falls, and alcohol poisoning.
He added that the holidays often see a spike in serious cardiac trauma.
“Symptoms of overindulgence can mimic a cardiac event, so some people may chalk up feelings of nausea, serious indigestion, headache, and other ailments to the simple results of having too much fun, or may not wish to trouble family members during the holidays. If these symptoms persist or if you feel your situation is deteriorating, it is wise to take quick action. This may help to avoid a more serious cardiac problem.”
The HRSRH Emergency and Trauma Programs encourage the public to practice moderation, and stay safe during the holidays.
