Health Sciences North  has appointed Mark Hartman as Senior Vice-President, Patient Experience and Digital Transformation effective Dec. 10.

He will be the successor to David McNeil, who has accepted the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Brant Community Healthcare System.

Hartman began his career as a radiation therapist in Australia and joined HSN in 1992 in the same role. He later served as coordinator and manager before being tasked from 2001 to 2004 as director of the $44 million capital expansion and renovation project for the Northeastern Ontario Cancer Centre.

He subsequently served as administrative director of the regional cancer program, as interim vice-president in 2009-2011 and was appointed in a permanent capacity as vice-president in 2012. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Radiation Technology from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Master’s in Business Administration from Athabasca University.

A Certified Health Executive, he chaired the NEON Lights Chapter of the Canadian College of Health Leaders.

“Mark was unanimously recommended from 34 applicants by a 10-member committee composed of Board members, union presidents, the Co-Chair of the CEO’s Patient and Family Advisory Council, medical and administrative leaders,” said HSN President and CEO Dominic Giroux. “We are so pleased to have Mark coming into this important position.”

Hartman's new role will see him lead a clinical portfolio of over 2,240 full-time equivalent employees, 500 highly-skilled medical staff, 2,100 learners and 469 beds in 13 sites in Greater Sudbury and in 25 locations in Northeastern Ontario outside Greater Sudbury with a clinical budget exceeding $356 million.

He will serve as official resource-person of the Quality Committee of the Board of Directors and serve on its Medical Advisory Committee. He will champion readiness for HSN’s 2019 accreditation, the implementation of Board-approved targets in HSN’s annual Quality Improvement Plan and of a proposed regional electronic medical record.

“It will be a privilege to help champion a high quality patient experience and a successful digital transformation at HSN”, said Hartman.

“HSN will finalize in 2019 a new Strategic Plan, a digital health strategy and a new capital master plan. I look forward to contributing to their implementation.”

As he moves to his new role, Hartman will be leaving the position of Regional Vice-President, Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Program, Cancer Care Ontario as well as the roles of Vice-President, Cancer and Clinical Support at HSN and of Chief Operating Officer at the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI).

“Mark drew on his 28 years of experience in cancer care to successfully oversee the quality and delivery of cancer services for Northeastern Ontario since 2004 and became a tremendously effective and well respected regional vice-president of Cancer Care Ontario”, said Michael Sherar, President and CEO of CCO.
