Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is calling on government workers to do their part to balance the budget and create jobs through a two-year freeze on public sector wages.

“Private sector workers are facing higher hydro bills and taxes while working longer hours for stagnant pay,” said Hudak, in a press release.

“At the same time, government workers have it better than ever, with 97,000 of them already making six figure salaries. That’s why I am going to freeze wages for all government workers. Starting with politicians. Starting with me.”

Under former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Premier Kathleen Wynne the number of government workers making six-figure salaries has more than quadrupled — 97,000 in all, the press release said.

“For the next two years, it does not matter if you are a politician, union leader, or senior bureaucrat, if you come asking for a raise – the answer will be ‘No’,” said Hudak.

“I will close and lock the vault door. I won’t ask taxpayers for another $2 billion in taxes just so we can give 1.1 million government workers another raise”

Under the Ontario PC Million Jobs Plan, a government-wide wage freeze will save Ontario taxpayers $2 billion per year, the press release said.

The wage freeze is a key component of the Ontario PC plan to balance the budget by 2016 and create one million new jobs over the next eight years.

“Like Dalton McGuinty, Kathleen Wynne will give government union leaders whatever they want because they help her get elected,” Hudak said.

“She will force everyone else to pay for her self-interested deals,” Hudak concluded. We are the only ones who will stand on your side and say ‘no’ to unaffordable wage increases for government workers. With our Million Jobs Plan – the better jobs and better pay will belong to you.”
