Inco Ltd. has received a Leadership Award from Canada?s Climate Change Voluntary Challenge and Registry (VCR Inc.) for displaying ?extraordinary commitment, action, and leadership toward the voluntary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.?

Inco received the award for the Mining Sector category at VCR Inc.?s annual Leadership Awards ceremony, held Tuesday in Hull, Que.

Winners are chosen for showing a significant decrease in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions, demonstrating senior management commitment, setting future reduction targets and preparing detailed action plans and progress reports.

?For the past decade we??ve been working hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a program of energy conservation and awareness in our operations, said Scott Hand, Inco chair and CEO.

?Our employees understand that wise energy use not only makes good business sense, but it also has a significant impact on greenhouse gas. They?ve done a great job and I want to thank them for their continuing commitment to this important objective.

Between 1990 and 2001, Inco reduced absolute emissions of greenhouse gases at its Canadian operations from 998 kilotonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide emissions to 919 kilotonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide emissions in 2001, a reduction of 79 kilotonnes or 8 per cent.

Canada?s Kyoto Protocol target calls for a greenhouse gas reduction of 6 per cent from 1990 levels.

Along with reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Inco has also reduced its total energy consumption. From 1990 to 2001, Inco reduced its total energy consumption by 15 per cent.
