Increased chance of landfill site odours for the next few months

Excavation work at the Sudbury Landfill Site begins today, which will result in an increased chance of landfill site odours until the project is completed at the end of March

The Sudbury Landfill Site gas collection system is being expanded, which means there will be an increased chance of landfill odour in the area for the next few months.

The project began today and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

In a release issued by the City of Greater Sudbury today, it was noted that odour mitigative measures will be undertaken but that it would be “possible for residents in the area to notice odours from time to time while work is ongoing depending on weather and wind conditions.”

Landfill odour issues can be reported online at 311.greatersudbury.ca or by phoning 311.

The gas collection system converts landfill gases for use as renewable energy, which the city media release notes reduces odours, prevents methane from migrating into the atmosphere and contributes to local smog and global climate change.

These environmental impacts tie into the city’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan, wherein the city has set a target to become a net-zero community by 2050. For a full report on the plan, click here

The energy that results is sold to Greater Sudbury Utilities, which generates revenue.

Although the city his cautioning residents about the potential for odour emanating from the gas collection system expansion, reports of odour emanating from the landfill site have been on the decline in recent months.
