The Emergency Department at the Sudbury Regional Hospital has prepared for increased demands for their services over the holiday season.

Additional staff have been scheduled to work on those days that traditionally have seen the heaviest traffic in emergency services.

?The emergency department is the only show in town at certain times during the holidays,? says Dr. Ray Wiss, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at the hospital. ?At this time of year we will often see more than our usual 200 emergency cases per day and that can translate into longer wait times for those with less urgent cases.

While doctors will do their best to see everyone as quickly as possible, some people will have to wait as patients are seen on a priority basis, said Wiss.

Critically ill patients will be seen immediately, he said.

The emergency department has over 65,000 annual visits, making it one of the busiest departments in Ontario.
