Irish Regiment volunteer gets surprise gift at Independent Grocers

John Goudreau given free groceries and gift cards he will use to help needy families

John Goudreau got more than he bargained for during his morning routine buying groceries at Dumas' Your Independent Grocers.

The past commander of the Irish Regiment of Canada in Sudbury, and long-time volunteer with the organization, didn’t have to pay a cent for his groceries Saturday morning.

In addition to the free groceries, Dumas' Your Independent Grocers gave him two $100 gift cards, he said he plans to give to local soldiers or needy families.

The gifts were all part of Loblaws’ Market Moments program, which recognizes community heroes across Canada.

Roger Beaulieu, store manager at Dumas' Your Independent Grocers, said it was the first time the store has participated in the program.

Beaulieu said Goudreau has been a long-time customer, and was an obvious pick for the gift, due to his 50 years of service with Irish Regiment, as a member, commander, honorary colonel and volunteer.
