A Sudbury developer and his consulting engineer have created a wetland and pond project that benefits people, the environment and the bottom line.

Sig Kirchhefer is the consulting engineer for Oliver Korpela, a Sudbury developer. The wetland pond area off Second Avenue became public property Saturday.
?There?s lots of fish here, now that we have provided a home for them,? said Sig Kirchhefer, consulting engineer for Oliver Korpela, a Sudbury developer.

He was referring to a nine-acre wetland site off Second Ave., near Ramsey Lake, complete with two ponds full of frolicking fish.

The land was donated in a public ceremony Saturday morning to the City of Greater Sudbury by Oliver Korpela, the developer of Lakeview, an adjacent
housing subdivision.

?People just love this place, seniors especially can use the walking trails for their enjoyment,? said Kirchhefer, the designer of the site.

Approximately 90 trees have been planted, a footbridge was constructed, trails developed and the City of Greater Sudbury is putting in public benches, according to Kirchhefer.

This wetland development was an alternative to establishing a conventional park that the city requires for new subdivisions.

The wetland includes fish ladders that will allow fish from Ramsey Lake to come upstream to the ponds.

?The Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has already carried out studies that five species of fish already call the ponds home, including baitfish
like creek chubs and perch,? said Kirchhefer.

?This developer, Oliver Korpela, took pride in this site, making sure that it would benefit the living environment, look pleasing to the eye, that it will last for generations to come and be cost conscious.?
