Mayor Brian Bigger made it official this morning by issuing an official proclamation at Pioneer Manor: It's National Volunteer Week in Greater Sudbury.

“So many great organizations in our community are providing volunteering services,” said Bigger. “As you know, being a great city is not an easy thing to do. At it's core, you need dedicated, selfless community-minded people who are all about volunteerism.

“I can't begin to express my gratitude to all the men and women volunteers in our community.”

Also on hand were representatives of the Sudbury Volunteer Managers Network (SVMN), a joint group initiative between the United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts and Volunteer Sudbury.

The group is made up of volunteer managers who gather monthly to build on their skills through training and peer mentorship.

“I am honoured to work with so many wonderful volunteers,” said Linda Dupuis, the community initiatives manager for United Way. “The contribution they make to the community is truly immeasurable.”

Barb Nott, a retired educator, long-time volunteer and board member of Volunteer Sudbury, spoke about volunteerism on the national stage — this year's National Volunteer Week also coincides with Canada's 150th anniversary.

“Local volunteers make Sudbury a great place to live,” Nott said. “Across Canada, not only has the amount of volunteerism increased, but the impact of volunteerism is increasing as well. Volunteers give freely of their time and expertise in order to make a difference.”

National Volunteer Week runs until April 29 and aims to recognize volunteerism in all its forms throughout the country.

To celebrate, Volunteer Canada, a national organization that champions volunteerism, will release a series of crossword puzzles that reveal the impacts, benefits and diverse ways Canadians are involved in communities.
