Sudbury MPP Jamie West, is calling on Doug Ford to honour the results of the passed Opposition Day motion, and scrap his government’s changes to the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).

“Doug Ford needs to listen to northern families who are telling him his flawed plan will force their children to go without supports because they can't afford to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for therapy,” said West.

“Families in Northern Ontario are already struggling to access therapy because there are not enough providers in our area – including those that provide services in French for francophone families. The Ford government’s cuts to the autism program will make this situation even worse.”

On Wednesday, the legislative assembly passed an NDP motion to stop the government’s implementation of an autism program that will shift from a needs-based system to one that is age and family income-based.

The NDP motion called for a new, evidence-based and needs-based program to be designed and put in place for families of children with autism.

Conservative MPPs spoke against the motion, and voted against the motion, but the NDP won the vote.

The motion is non-binding, so the NDP is now pushing for it to be honoured.
