KED supporters need to go to rehab, council candidate says

'Short of a 12-step rehabilitation program what can be done to cure this addiction?'

A council candidate in Ward 11 taking part in the legal appeals to try and stop the Kingsway Entertainment District says supporters of the project need to sober up.

“Intoxication can take various forms and not necessary related to alcohol,” John Lindsay writes in a letter to sudbury.com. “Not even the projections of millions of dollars of expenditure and rising tax rates have sobered up the committed who staunchly defend their misguided choices regardless of considerable public concern.

“Even more worrying are the same positions taken by many candidates in the forthcoming municipal election. Short of a 12-step rehabilitation program what can be done to cure this addiction to wants rather than needs?”

It's time for “sober second thought,” Lindsay writes, particularly for voters trying to decide whom to vote for.

“As for voters, take the time to review the platform of those seeking election to determine who best represents your interests and who hopefully when elected will not become intoxicated with dreams of spending for wants and not needs. This is the opportunity.”

Intoxication can take various forms and not necessary related to alcohol. It would seem that our present council has been under the influence with respect to the Kingsway Entertainment District and the Art Junction Project downtown.

Not even the projections of millions of dollars of expenditure and rising tax rates have sobered up the committed who staunchly defend their misguided choices regardless of considerable public concern. Even more worrying are the same positions taken by many candidates in the forthcoming municipal election. Short of a 12-step rehabilitation program what can be done to cure this addiction to wants rather than needs?

It would appear that for most of those afflicted they prefer to ignore reality in its various forms, including financial. They do not want to be “confused by the facts” and like true addicts make up excuses to justify for their behaviour and often blame others.

We can only suggest with the greatest respect that “sober second thought” should be required of all now on council and those wishing to return plus those other individuals hoping to be elected with respect to the big ticket legacy projects.

As for voters, take the time to review the platform of those seeking election to determine who best represents your interests and who hopefully when elected will not become intoxicated with dreams of spending for wants and not needs. This is the opportunity.
