The axes were flying Sunday afternoon, as participants shared some laughs and friendly competition for a good cause.

For the second year, Sudbury's Northern Axperts Lounge hosted Axe Cancer, the local edition of a fundraiser to help send kids battling cancer to Camp Quality Northern Ontario.

"We wanted to have a different and unique fundraising event," said Daniel Denoble, of Camp Quality Northern Ontario. "All of the money raised today is going toward Camp Quality Northern Ontario. We send kids affected by cancer from Northern Ontario to camp each summer.

“Our camp week is coming up the second week of July. So all the money raised today is going to help us in July."

The local event is part of a nationwide effort to raise money in support of Camp Quality's work. Teams of four each paid $160 to take part in a friendly competition, and help kids at the same time.

Obed Boateng from RBC was all smiles after nailing a bullseye with one of his throws. Not bad for someone who had never thrown an axe before in a competition.

"It was my second shot!" Boateng said, attributing his quick success to "sharp eyes and good coaching.

"We want to encourage people to give back to their community,” he said, when asked why he was taking part in the Father's Day event.  “I believe in corporations that really invest a lot of energy and resources into helping the community prosper. It's one of the values we have at RBC, so we found it was a very good cause to help."

Denoble said the fundraising goal for the North Bay and Sudbury events was $7,000.

"I'm hoping we can raise more than that today, and it seems to be going great so far," he said.  "It's been a really good response. Sponsors have been really gracious in the community to step up. We had more than 10 teams registered, we have numerous lanes sponsors. Really good. People are receptive to helping us send some kids to camp.

"The thought last year is it would be a one-time event. But it went so well, and this year it has grown a bit. The plan is to try and keep it as one of our major fundraising events."
