The newly opened Kivi Park off of Long Lake Road in the city's South End has proven to be so popular, the park's development team has had to add an additional 40 parking spots.

At one point last Sunday afternoon, there were 82 cars at the park's entrance, and some cars were even parked along Long Lake Road. So Pioneer Construction has added the extra parking.

“Obviously we want all visitors and guests to the park to come and enjoy it and see what it's all about, but we also want everybody to be safe,” said Melissa Sheridan, who's overseeing the park's development. “Knowing that that corridor they travel through often has a speed issue in terms of the speed the vehicles are travelling, for the safety of all guests, it's better that we can get them off of the road.”

Sheridan said some parking spots are also being added on Raft Lake Road, an entrance to the park popular with fat bikers.

Set on 300 acres of Cambrian Shield overlooking Long Lake in Sudbury, Kivi Park sits on land donated by Sudbury resident Lily Fielding.

It also encompasses the former Long Lake Public School* site, bought by the city with a $245,000 donation from Fielding. The park includes cross-country ski, snowshoe and fat-biking trails, and a skating rink.

The fact that the park has proven to be such a hit with residents is great, Sheridan said.

“It's what the whole Kivi Park development team has been striving for since the beginning,” she said. “Our whole entire team worked extremely hard over the summer months to get these trails up and running, and it's great to see it being accessed by so many different people.”

Kivi Park is hosting a number of upcoming events. That includes the Kivi Park Winter Karnival March 4 and the Northern Cancer Foundation fundraiser Trek for Cancer March 5.
