Mark Carney understands the unique challenges of Northern Ontario, Sudbury Liberal MP Viviane Lapointe said in endorsing Carney as Liberal Party of Canada leader.

“Canada faces an unprecedented set of serious and complex challenges,” Lapointe said in a media release announcing her endorsement.

“These challenges directly affect our community. That is why it was important for me to consult with constituents in Sudbury and my colleagues across northern Ontario. Through these discussions, it is clear that Mark understands the North and the extraordinary potential in this region.”

Carney, she added, “is uniquely well-suited to understand the interrelated, high stakes challenges and rise to the occasion. He has a proven record of taking on roles when the challenges that lay ahead were great.”

Carney is a former Governor of the Bank of Canada and serves as chair of board of directors for Bloomberg L.P.

Nickel Belt Liberal MP Marc Serré announced his endorsement of Carney on Wednesday afternoon, when he said Carney “understands the economy, the specific needs of rural regions like Northern Ontario, and the importance of critical minerals and mining, and therefore is well suited to effectively champion the issues that matter most to our region.”

Central to whomever becomes Liberal Party of Canada leader will be negotiating with United States President Donald Trump, Serré noted.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lapointe told Sudbury.com that she was still considering which Liberal Party of Canada leadership candidate she would endorse.

It’s “crucial” that local Liberals be heard from in making a decision on which candidate to endorse, Lapointe said, adding that she has been and will continue to hear from people prior to making a decision, which she did the following day.

“With Mark Carney’s unparalleled experience and achievements, the contrast to Pierre Poilievre’s empty slogans and rhetoric could not be more evident,” Lapointe said in her media release. “In the face of threats to our livelihoods and sovereignty, we need a tested leader with courage and grit. That person is Mark Carney.”

Yesterday, The Canadian Press published a rundown of Liberal Party of Canada leadership candidates, which can be viewed by clicking here.

Alongside Carney is Chandra Arya, Jaime Battiste, Frank Baylis, Michael Clark, Ruby Dhalla, Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould.
