Sudbury MPP and Ontario Minister of Energy Glenn Thibeault announced Thursday that Ontario is supporting a number of organizations in Sudbury with measures to help reduce their electricity bills.

Thibeault made the announcement on July 20 at Laurentian University, highlighting the benefits several local organizations will see as a result of the recent expansion of the Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI).

“With the recent expansions to the Industrial Conservation Initiative, eligible organizations that reduce their peak hour consumption will see their electricity bills lowered," said Thibeault.

"These savings will help ensure local organizations can continue to offer the high quality public services Sudbury families rely on.”

ICI allows large electricity users, such as Laurentian, Cambrian College, Collège Boréal and Health Sciences North to lower their electricity costs by reducing their use of electricity during peak hours. Participants can lower their bills by up to one third.

“Given the financial pressures faced by all colleges but especially smaller ones and those in the North, the Industrial Conservation Initiative provides welcome relief," said Daniel Giroux, President, Collège Boréal.

"Every dollar saved on electricity costs is one more dollar that can go directly into enhancing the student experience at Collège Boréal. And the great thing is that it promotes energy conservation, which not only helps the bottom line but our environment as well.”

Starting July 1, newly eligible participants are seeing the impacts of Ontario’s decision to expand this program to include more organizations and businesses across the province, including:

  • All electricity consumers with average monthly peak demand greater than 1 megawatt (MW)
  • Electricity consumers with an average monthly peak demand greater than 500 kilowatts (kW) and less than 1 MW in the manufacturing and greenhouse sectors.
  • Reducing electricity costs is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
