Laurentian mine rescue takes title at international competition

Student team wins in first aid competition, field competition and overall title

The Laurentian University Mine Rescue Team has claimed the overall title at the 2017 Colorado School of Mines International Mine Emergency Response Demonstration, according to a Facebook post.

The team of Laurentian students won first place in three categories of the competition: first aid, underground scenario and overall.

Ontario Mine Rescue congratulated the Laurentian team in a Facebook post.

"Ontario Mine Rescue would like to recognize the dedication of the Laurentian students and staff that traveled to Colorado, as well as the numerous other students and staff that have worked for the past two years to create the student-lead Mine Rescue program at the university," the post reads. "Though the trophies provide the students with recognition for their hard work, the reward for the rest of us will be the Mine Rescue knowledge these future leaders bring to mines around the world."

According to its Facebook page, the Laurentian University Mine Rescue Club is the first mine rescue club in Ontario run by students. Its members strive to make a positive contribution to the mining industry by getting involved in mine rescue early on in their careers.
