ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible.

Ninety percent of those who get ALS will die within three to five years. Approximately 750 Ontarians currently live with ALS.

Founded in the late 1980s and part of a national voluntary ALS network, the ALS Society of Ontario enables people with ALS to live with dignity and choice through the loan of equipment, support groups, health care education, referral to community services and individual advocacy for the provision of quality care. Additional information about the ALS Society of Ontario is available at www.alsont.ca.

?We are grateful to the LCBO, its employees, some of whom have been touched by ALS and customers for providing this opportunity. The LCBO?s province-wide store network is a very effective way for us to raise awareness of this little known disease and raise funds to alleviate the financial and emotional burden of living with this devastating disease,? said Grace Burns, president of the ALS Society of Ontario, in a written statement.
