Leadership grants open to Black youth with big ideas

If you are aged 13-19 and have an idea for a community project or event that honours Black culture, heritage and excellence, the Afro Women and Youth Foundation just might have a micro-grant for you.

If you are a Black youth and have an idea for a community project or event that honours Black culture, heritage and excellence, the Afro Women and Youth Foundation might have a micro-grant for you. 

With a total of $4,000 micro-grants, eight successful individuals or group applicants, ages 13 to 19, who have community project or event ideas that honours and celebrate Black Heritage, Culture and Excellence will get $500 each to organize community projects or host events within the city.  

A release from AWYF states the micro-grants will help Black youth make a positive impact in their community, receive funding to bring their ideas to life and enhance their leadership skills through training, community engagement and mentorship

Applications are now open and are accepted through Jan 20. Successful applicants will be notified by Jan 24 and invited to participate in a Youth Leadership & Advocacy Training program before they implement their community projects.

The micro-grant is funded by the City of Greater Sudbury through the Arts and Culture Grants.  The AWYF’s Youth Leadership and Advocacy Training and 2025 Black History Month events are supported by AfroFest Sudbury, Greater Sudbury Public Library and Northern Ontario Black Economic Empowerment Program (NOBEEP).

Who Can Apply?

  • All Black youth (African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Indigenous, Afro-Arab or Afro-Latinx) between the ages of 13 and 19
  • Youth with a community project or event idea that can be implemented with a $500 budget
  • Youth who are interested in enhancing leadership skills and showcasing Black History and Culture through Arts
