Let's get geeky! Graphic-Con 2019 was all kinds of super fun

Downtown Sudbury was the place to be Saturday

Graphic-Con 2019 drew heroes, villains and mere mortals alike to downtown Sudbury yesterday.

The annual event has achieved considerable growth over the years, attracting cosplayers, vendors and fans from across the Nickle City and beyond.

Amanda Harte, president of the Graphic-Con board of directors, told Sudbury.com the growth is a byproduct of the event's remarkable variety, which features "everything from horror, sci-fi, fantasy, video games, anime, comic books" and more.

In addition to the main convention at the Sudbury Arena, Spacecraft Brewery, DIY Craftery and Lounge, Downtown Sudbury Marketplace and La Fromagerie, all hosted partnered events either before, during or after Graphic-Con.

Besides the fan festival at Sudbury Arena, downtown Sudbury was the place to be Saturday. The annual Blues for Food rocked for a good cause on Durham Street, while the 14th Earth Festival brought both fun and a social conscience to Memorial Park.

"The whole base of this year was to have an event run by community members for the community," said Harte. "So we're trying to get as many people from the community, especially the local businesses, involved with it."

"The whole point of Graphic-Con (is) to show just how much Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario has to offer in relation to cons, conventions, geeky and nerdy lifestyles," she said. " There's so much up here in Northern Ontario (and) people miss out on it because everyone's so focused on everywhere else in the world."
