WATCH: Workers Memorial Day ceremony

Honouring all workers who lost their lives while on the job or to industrial diseases

On June 20, 1984, a seismic event measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck Falconbridge Mine, leading to the deaths of four miners — Sulo Korpela, Richard Chenier, Daniel Lavallee and Wayne St. Michel.

Every year since the tragedy, Mine Mill Local 598/Unifor has held a Workers' Memorial Day gathering on June 20.

Due to COVID-19, this year's event will be held virtually right here on Sudbury.com.

Join Mine Mill Local 598/Unifor in honouring all the workers who lost their lives due to on-the-job accidents or industrial diseases this morning.

Watch the livestream in the video above beginning around 9:20 a.m.

The event will feature guest speakers, including local politicians, union and company officials and labour community representatives. As well as live speeches and moment of silence from the Epitaph at the union's campground on Richard Lake.
