If not for a neighbour who happened to be up late last night, a house fire in Lively could have been a lot worse.

That neighbour noticed the fire at 1:07 a.m. and called it in to Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

Once they arrived, it only took firefighters from stations in Walden, Lively and Long Lake about 20 minutes to contain the blaze, but the fire still did an estimated $75,000 worth of smoke and fire damage to the attached garage of the Ben Street home.

No one was home at the time of the fire, Platoon Chief André Groulx told Sudbury.com this morning. The damage was mostly confined to the garage, but there is some smoke damage to the interior of the home as well.

An extension cord powering some heating mats is the likely cause of the fire, Groulx said. Most of the damage to the garage was limited to the area of the cord and mats.

Groulx said if there's any lesson to be learned from the fire, it has to do with the use of extension cords.

"I would remind people that extension cords should never be used as a permanent source of power. That's not what they're made for."
