An odour hanging above Lively has become more pungent during the past couple of days according to a report released July 22 by the city?s infrastructure and emergency services department.

The stench is a result of a seasonal biological change in a tailing pond located in the Creighton Mine area. Northerly winds have carried the smell towards Lively.

Inco?s tailing pond is used by the city to dispose of municipal wastewater. A tailing pond is a large pool area where crushed stone and other waste produced by mining is drained.

Tailings have dried during the recent heat waves and produced the odour. While the smell is unpleasant, citizens are not at risk.

The city and Inco have joined forces to find a long term solution to the tailing pond problem. In the meantime, city officials are applying odour control products such as hydrated lime slurry.

The easiest way for residents to avoid taking in the smell is to close all windows and doors.
