Local bands are joining together at Theatre Cambrian this upcoming Oct. 1 for a night of tribute for The Tragically Hip and to fundraise for brain cancer research.

Diagnosed this year with a terminal brain tumour, Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip announced this Aug. 20 would be the last concert they would play together, happening in their hometown of Kingston.

An estimated 11.7 million people watched as a nation of Tragically Hip fans united for their last concert.

The Tragically Hip concert and Gord Downie Fund has sparked the interest of local band groups in Sudbury to put together a concert to fundraise for brain cancer research.

“We are honoured to partner with Blackwood Sinners on this endeavour,” said Theatre Cambrian executive artistic director Mark Mannisto, in a press release.

“Last Saturday the country stopped to watch a final farewell to the rock legends that are The Hip. We are pleased that we are able to help Blackwood Sinners and local bands fundraise for the Gord Downie Fund at Sunnybrook hospital.”

Spearheading the project is lead guitarist from Blackwood Sinners, Andre Beaulieu.

“Watching the concert Saturday, every song brought me back to a point in my life and I realize what an influence The Tragically Hip has had on me,” said Beaulieu.

“This is about giving back to Gord for what he has done musically, and contributing to an important cause”. Beaulieu recently lost a best friend to brain cancer.

Local bands will perform the last Tragically Hip concert in its entirety at Theatre Cambrian this Oct. 1, with all proceeds going to the Gord Downie Fund. A full roster of performers will be released over the upcoming weeks.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online, reserved over the telephone, or by visiting the office at 40 Eyre Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
